PRIMARY SCIENCE FAIR
The Health and Safety Authority returns to the RDS in 2009 to sponsor the Primary Science Fair, this exciting part of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The Primary Science Fair forms an integral part of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. Whilst not part of the competition itself, it encourages primary students to think about science in practical and fun ways. Making science real to them is what counts. The Fair also develops the students’ skills in communicating their interest and knowledge of science to others.
The HSA Primary Science Fair at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition takes place on Thursday 8th, Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of January 2009 at the RDS in Dublin.
Categories
The Primary Science Fair reflects the broad and balanced primary science curriculum and this year participants are encouraged to think about safety as it relates to their project. Having an understanding of hazards and learning how to be safe is core to the teaching and learning of science at primary level. The primary school curriculum has four content strands:
- Living things
- Energy and forces
- Materials
- Environmental Awareness
As well as these, there are two skill development strands: ‘Working Scientifically’ and ‘Designing and Making’. Observing safety procedures is explicit in both of these strands of the curriculum.
Entrants in the Primary ScienceFair 2009 are invited to work within the above categories
and to have either a safety theme to their project or show that their project was carried out observing safety procedures. A maximum of 100 class projects will be displayed. Successful schools will be invited to exhibit on one of the following dates:
- Thursday 8th January (40 Projects)
- Friday 9th January(40 Projects)
- Saturday 10th January (20 Projects)
Prizes will be awarded each day to participating students and teachers.
Northern Ireland
This year, primary schools in Northern Ireland are invited to participate and teachers are also asked to include a safety theme within their project in combination with the content strands of the N.I. primary science curriculum.
To Enter
We are asking 4th, 5th and 6th class students to enter the competition. Students must work as a class under the supervision of their teacher. To enter, teachers must fill in the entry form (available in the Download section on the top right of this screen), provide a list of participating students and write an outline of the project explaining what it is all about and how it will look.
